Before summer ends, trek to your backyard for a campover with
your children and their friends.
For starters, find a griot -- a West African storyteller -- (or recruit one of your
dramatic friends) to read African folk stories to the kids about Anansi the spider and others by a bonfire. Griots historically
have played a critical role in West African and African American societies because our stories often were not written down.
Send our adorable campover invitations (grab them here) to your child’s guests with a reminder to bring their sleeping bags.
On the day of the party, set up the tent in the
backyard, and gather some wood for a small bonfire. As for food, fire up the grille and burn a few mini-burgers for the kids.
Don’t forget the veggies! Grilled corn-on-cob will definitely be a hit.
After the sun sets, gather the kids
around the fire and then hand it over to the griot. Have a number of games in mind in case the kids don’t immediately
fall asleep. Sleep tight, don’t let the mosquitoes bite!
Warning!
There will be hungry kids in your backyard when the sun rises the next morning. Stock up on fruit, juices,
and cereal boxes.
Have a “trek” of a time at your family‘s very own campgrounds!
